U16 Championship 1/4 Final  - 5th Nov 23

Piltown 2-7   St Annes 2-5.

It might be November but it was a fine day for a match in Piltown this morning. The U16 quarter final versus St Annes could have been anyone’s game as only a point divided these teams in their last two meetings.

Four first half points came from Ruby Norris and Grace Farrell. They also snagged a goal a-piece, Grace’s from free. The backs worked hard to protect their territory and goalie Kate Farrell had plenty to do to prevent St Annes from scoring. At half time Piltown led by 2-4 to 1-3, which means nothing in a camogie match so plenty more hard work was required to get a victory.

Brid Fogarty opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play. Scores were harder to come by as the battle intensified. A placed ball from Grace Farrell went over the bar before 2 unanswered point were scored by St Annes. A fine point from play by Eimear Commins was to be Piltown’s last score, building a 5 point lead.

A late goal from St Annes wasn’t enough to reel Piltown in and the black and amber girls got a two point win that sees them into a championship semi final.

Full time score Piltown 2-7, St Annes 2-5.

Kate Farrell, Emily Falconer, Katelynn Moore, Ruby Norris (1-3), Fiona Fogarty, Emma O'Shea, Ellen Cooney, Cliodhna Malone, Brid Fogarty (0-1), Rachel Tennyson, Grace Farrell (1-2), Georgina Quirk, Keelin Brophy, Eimear Commins (0-1), Saoirse Barry. Subs Sarah O'Shea, Kate Fogarty.

Junior Champ 1/4 Final.       - Carrickshock GAA  - Sunday 15 Oct 23.

Piltown 0-04   Dicksboro 2-06

Dowling double does it for Dicksboro.

A second half pair of Kate Dowling goals paved the way for Dicksboro to overcome the challenge of Piltown on a super sunny Sunday in Hugginstown, home of Carrickshock GAA.

It was a very close game until that time Dowling got her double in the 41st and 49th minute, with the steady free taking of Chloe Holden matching the exploits of the equally steady Sinead Carroll from Dicksboro.

Dicksboro had opened the scoring in the 5th minute through the impressive Rose Kelly as she put the ball over Maire Beth Kirbys crossbar from out on the right hand side of the pitch. Edel Long hit the reply for Piltown as she went down the right wing and put the ball over the bar at the scoreboard end.

It was a running game as the ball was worked between the lines, a lot of ball to hand, and low ball into the forward lines, but both back lines were on top and scoring opportunities were scarce, but Piltown forward Chloe Holden got free on the left hand side and hit a fine point over the bar.

Rose Kelly was creating trouble with her running on and off the ball and kept Rachel OShea and Fiona Downey busy, Kelly did score her second point in the 21st minute to level the game again.

Chances were scarce, and when they arose they had to be taken, and when Sinead Carroll got the chance from two frees , she took them to put the Boro two points ahead approaching half time. Piltown then got a chance from a free right on half time through Chloe Holden and she took it and left the score at half time Piltown 0-03 Dicksboro 0-04

Ref Paul Hunston restarted the game and Dicksboro attacked coming down their right side as Emer Phelan got past Sophie Long and then Lisa Norris to put the ball over the bar. Piltown tried to call with surging runs forward from Eden Long, Ciara Dunne and Leah Cooney as they tried to turn the game in their favour.

Angela Carroll and Danielle Kenny stood tall in the Boro defence though and restricted the scoring in the second half to one pointed free from Chloe Holden. Kate Dowling then took over the scoring as she grabbed goals in the 41st and 49th minutes to put the team in maroon ahead, and she finished it off with a point on the stroke of full time.

It was a pity for Piltown to be missing a few key players due to the Senior game the previous day, but the girls that lined out put on a good performance

Senior Camogie Semi Final  -  Sat 14 October 23  - Thomastown GAA.

Piltown 1-7     Dicksboro 0-12

Prendergast Puts the Boro past Piltown.

Dicksboro corner forward Aoife Prendergast scored 0-07 as she helped her club get over the line and into another Senior county final at the expense of their big rivals Piltown on a chilly, but sun drenched Saturday afternoon in Thomastown Gaa club.

These two teams never fail to entertain when they meet , and once again that was the case in front of a big crowd , where they did battle beside the Castle for 60 odd minutes in a match that was full of incident, full blooded tackling and excellent score taking.

Referee Conor Everard threw the ball in and battle commenced, with Katie Power getting the ball in hand , ran through and placed the ball over the black spot in the second minute. Piltown had the strong breeze that was blowing towards the dressing room, with the sun shining from behind the stand across the pitch. On the pitch , Aoife Prendergast was standing over her first opportunity of a score and she made no mistake to draw it level in the fourth minute, she repeated the feat one minute later as once again the Piltown defence committed a foul within scoring range.

Katie Power matched the Boro forwards tally with her second point , and then Piltown went ahead as Aoife Doyle struck one over the bar from play. Once again , another foul, another free , another point as the Boro number 13 Prendergast made it 3 from 3 for her after 10 mins. Orla Hanrick then got her first of the day as she scored a fine point from outside the 21 as she got some space and put the ball over Aoife Norris’s crossbar. 21 minutes gone and Aine Doyle grabbed a point from a central position. Piltown were now getting frees in scorable positions, but the breeze went against Piltown and took one free to the left , and then one to the right to maintain Dicksboro’s one point advantage. Heather Phelan scored a free after Katie Power was dragged down, and again the same taker pointed a free after a foul on Emer Long. Boro captain Jenny Clifford then made her presence felt as she got a point from the right hand side.

Piltown had the breeze , but the Boro had Prendergast , and she put another of the 6 frees conceded by Piltown in the first half over the bar to make it level again. Amy Clifford got free on the right side , took aim and fired her first shot in anger at the Piltown , it was accurate and it went over the bar in the 29th minute to regain the lead. But the half wasn’t over yet , Kellyann Doyle strode out from the half back line, looked up and placed the ball in Katie Powers hand on the Boro 45yd line, Power twisted , turned and got away from Niamh Phelan, and headed for goal, she took aim and fired a bullet to the back of Kirsty Mahers net as she did in the League Final two weeks ago. The roar that erupted in the full stand wasn’t after dying down when ref Everard blew the whistle for half time.

Piltown 1-06 Dicksboro 0-07

The Boro were back out first, they were behind but they now had the breeze. Piltown came back out and got into position for a battle they knew they were now in. No quarter asked or given as the tackles were flying in and the free count was similar to the first half. Piltown missed three frees from the left side as they dropped or just went wide and those chances were becoming vital as the Boro upped their intensity and effort to try get back into the game.

Aoife Prendergast opened the scoring in the second half in the 37th minute with her fifth free of the game, as Piltown were getting forced deeper and deeper into their half by the sheer force of the Boro attack , Alanna Gallagher and Kellyann Doyle and Emily McCarthy were having a battle Royale with Asha McHardy , Aobha OGorman and Rachel Dowling as they put hurley and body in harms way to tackle and block their marker. Down the other end of the pitch Niamh Culleton got a lovely point as she picked up a breaking ball and put it over Mahers head and crossbar.

Boro were on top , but still behind on the score board until, guess who? Yes , Aoife Prendergast once again rose the white flag, this time from play , and then from a free to level the match in the 48th minute. The fact that there were only 4 scores in the first 18 minutes of a semi final will tell you how tense this was.

But now the undoubted class that the Boro team possess came to the fore despite the Piltown team leaving it all on the pitch, no regrets, no lack of effort , sheer doggedness and determination, even with all that against them Dicksboro went ahead through Amy Clifford in the 50th minute. Piltown huffed and puffed but could not break down the Boro defence. They had a few half chances, but unfortunately they drifted wide or fell short and were cleared. Amy Clifford got her third, and the final point of the match in the 55th minute to make the final score

Junior C -   Championship - Rd 1 - 13 Oct 23

Hard luck to our Junior C team who went down to a talented , skilful Young Irelands Camogie team in the first round of the Championship this evening. The team from Gowran were very clinical with their finishing and best of luck in the latter rounds.

Well done to Michelle OShea and Emma Walsh on their goals , and to all the players that have contributed and made the effort to keep our third adult side going throughout the season.

Junior Championship Rd 1.  - 8 Oct 23

Piltown 3 -10      Blacks and Whites 2-06

Piltown progressed to a Championship ¼ final after overcoming a spirited Blacks and Whites team in Graignamanagh on Sunday afternoon.

Piltown got a great start from their first attack when the ball was lobbed towards the square , and wing forward Aoife OShea got the ball in hand and gave Siofra McGilligan in the B&W goal no chance with a shot high into the net. It was a bad start for the girls from Skeoughvosteen , but they replied with a score as corner forward Sophie Phelan put the ball over the bar , but yet again, Piltown went straight back down and got goal number two , this time scored by Leah Cooney.

It was a disastrous start for Blacks and Whites, and when Chloe Holden put a free over the bar , it left them six points down after 5 minutes. But it got worse as Nicola Phelan got a point and then another goal from the right side before Cliodhna Murphy steadied the Blacks and Whites ship a little bit with a point from play and one from a free .

Leah Cooney tagged on another point before a foul by a Piltown defender resulted in a penalty being awarded. It was Cliodhna Murphy standing over the sliothar , and she went to the left side, and it barely beat Maire Beth Kirbys outstretched hurley and into the bottom corner.

Would this kickstart their match? Piltown replied with three points from Leah Cooney before Cliodhna Murphy continued her fine display of shooting by scoring 3 more frees to close out the half.

Half Time score : Piltown 3-06 Blacks & Whites 1-06.

It was turning into a tough game, and Blacks and Whites were battling to get back into it, but Lorna OShea , who was outstanding throughout the game, and Alice Talbot were working really hard and denying Blacks and Whites any options.

Alice got a score herself in the 32nd minute , with the scoring chances now being limited as the scoreline seemed to affect both sides display. Too far ahead and too far behind and the game itself suffered as we only had 3 scores in the first 23 minutes of the half, with Chloe Holden grabbing her third point of the game , before Katie Whelan ,who was wearing the number 5 jersey, tore down the left wing in the 53rd minute and lobbed a dangerous, goalies nightmare of a ball towards the back post , and it went inside the post for Blacks and Whites second goal of the day.

That was to be their one and only score of the second half. Piltown weren’t finished though as Edel Long , who fielded some great high balls all day , and Nicola Phelan scored the final points of the game.

Piltown march on to the Quarter Final.

Final Score.

Senior Championship Quarterfinal -    8 Oct 23

Piltown 3-15     Clara 0-07

Doyle does the damage.

Aoife Doyle grabbed a hat trick of goals as she helped put a finely tuned Piltown team into the Championship semi final after a dominant display over Clara on a perfect day in Graiguenamanagh G.A.A .

They may have been dominant, and it looks like an easy victory if you judge it by the final score , but Piltown had to work very hard to over power a determined, and dogged Clara side.

Sinead McCarthy started the scoring in the second minute as Piltown were shooting towards the scoreboard end, but with very little breeze , there was no advantage from the elements for either side.

Aoife Doyle started her scoring in the 8th minute with a point from the right hand side, as both sides tried to assert some dominance , and Clara were fighting to keep Piltown pegged back. Clara scored their first chance in the 12th minute through Keara Ryan from a free, and Ryan got one from play a minute later. And then Clara went ahead. From left half forward Lucy Boyd as she pointed coming in field from her wing.

Clara were in front and had kept Piltown scoreless for 8 minutes until Kellyann Doyle got the ball in hand, she delivered a perfect pass to Katie Power , Power in turn found Aoife Doyle , and she found the net with a unstoppable shot blasted past Aoife Glynn in the Clara goal. Sinead McCarthy then got her second of the day as she picked up loose ball around the 45 and rose the white flag.

The goal seemed to spur on the girls from Piltown and it was starting to become one way traffic , as Heather Phelan scored 3 frees and one from play in the next 5 minutes , added to by a monster free from Aine Doyle out near the half way line, with Sophie Holden getting her first on the 28th minute. Clara had their hands full now as the team in Black were in full flow. The team in maroon did finish the half brightly though with Keara Ryan scoring two points in first half injury time.

HALF TIME SCORE : Piltown 1-09 Clara 0-05

Liz Dempsey threw the sliothar in to start the second half and straight away a foul led to Heather Phelan taking a free central on the 45 yard line, she made no mistake. Heather repeated that strike from nearer the stand side five minutes later as Piltown were now well on top but they had to work hard for every score, Clara were not giving up despite the score line. They did get through on goal twice but Aoife Norris kept out Emma Shortall and Grainne Glynn.

Sophie Holden scored another two points as she turned her marker and sprinted away into the space behind her and took her scores.

Then in the 43rd minute, the same duo were again involved in Piltowns second goal with the ever increasing influence of Katie Power causing the Clara half back line problems, and it was Power that once again delivered the pass to the incoming Aoife Doyle , and Doyle raised the green flag .

Emma Shortall got Clara’s first score of the second half in the 47th minute as Clara tried to reduce the lead , although it seemed a lost cause , and it became even more so when provider became scorer in the 56th minute when Katie Power struck one over the black spot , Keara Ryan got her 5th in the 58th minute before Aoife Doyle broke through and got her third goal of the the day , Katie Power then finished the game with her second in the 60th minute.

FINAL SCORE:

Piltown 3-15

(Aoife Doyle 3-01, Sinead McCarthy 0-02 , Heather Phelan 0-06 (5 frees) , Aine Doyle 0-01 (1free) , Sophie Holden 0-03, Katie Power 0-02 )

Clara  0-07

Senior Lge Final.    30 Sept 23

Piltown 1-11   Dicksboro 1-13

Dicksboro were victorious in the Michael Lyng Motors Senior League final played in Blacks & Whites GAAs Tom Walsh Pk where they overcame a gallant Piltown side.

The two sides had already met in the League , way back in round 1 when the city team came out on top by 5 points. Their victory here wasn’t as cut and dry with the game still there to be won deep into injury time.

The game was barely 4 minutes old when Aoife Doyle went down injured after she went over on her ankle, this forced an early change and Lorna OShea came in. The youngest Doyle sister , Aine, had the first chance of the game in the 5th minute as she stood over a free, and she made no mistake as she struck into the breeze and the driving rain.

Straight from Kirsty Mahers puck out , The Boro had their first chance of a score after Rachel Dowling was fouled and Aoife Prendergast hit it over the bar to draw the sides level.

Conditions were tough, with a stiff breeze and driving rain and a very heavy pitch underfoot , it wasn’t affecting either team though as they fought hard to get on top. Aobha OGorman put The Boro back on top with a point in the 9th minute before Heather Phelan got her first point in the 11th minute.
Dicksboro had the wind and were slowly gaining momentum , as the forward players were getting on a lot of ball. Aoife Prendergast had a second free in the 13th minute to edge them ahead again, but immediately from Aoife Norris’s puck out down the right wing of Piltown, Ellen OKeeffe won possession and was fouled near the sideline .
Aine Doyle went over to take it and she drove the sliothar towards the left side of the goalmouth, Katie Power jumped and challenged Kirsty Maher and Angela Carroll for the high ball. It was hard to see clearly but the ball was struck into net, and Power ran away celebrating.

The points were swapped as another free from Heather Phelan increased the lead to 3 points in the 19th minute before Aobha OGorman and Aoife Prendergast nabbed points for The Boro. It was a great reaction to the Piltown goal, and then The Boro had a goal of their own as Rachel Dowling was set up after a great run from midfield by Prendergast, drew the defender and put it in over her head to Dowling, and from the left side , she gave Aoife Norris no chance in the Piltown goal.

Dicksboro were on top now, and three frees from the hurley of Prendergast was making the difference ,with Aobha OGorman and Caoimhe Dowling also tapping over points in a 10 minute purple patch for the team in maroon. They ended up with just two wides and 11 scores in this half. The last score of the half was a free from the hurley of Heather Phelan to leave the scores at half time : Piltown 1-04 Dicksboro 1-10

Ref Shane Foley restarted the game with Piltown now having the breeze , and after scoring the last of the first, she scored the first of the second from the right side, for Heathers fourth point of the game. Piltown were now more settled and organised and were on top , with Aine Doyle and Katie Power adding more points to the score. It took the Boro 13 mins to score when Aoife Prendergast put over her seventh in the 43rd minute, and soon followed by a point from Asha McHardy. It was a five point lead now , but Piltown were on top, although scoring chances were at a premium, they were controlling things. Aine Doyle scored another two frees to reduce the deficit to three with 10 mins left.

It was then a stalemate for the next 10minutes until Lorna OShea broke through the middle , and you could see she thought about going for goal, but took her point to leave two between them.Heather put her fifth free of the game over the bar deep into injury time, before Rachel Dowling put her free over the bar in the 66th minute to make the final score

Junior League Final   - 24 Sept 23

Piltown 2-06      Tullogher 0-13.

We took to the field for this long awaited final against Tullogher on a morning that even the flags didn’t want to go out in. A hello to club and county stalwart Sheila on the gate , a wet , windy morning with horizontal rain blowing from right to left as we stood in the stand awaiting the two teams to emerge for their ‘warm up’ , nothing except a mug a’tae could do that job today!

They went through their routines , naming of the team, team pic, some more deep heat , ‘Kay have you any tissues’ , a few drills, stretches, and both teams were ready.

The ball was in and away we went, Piltown chose to play with the wind in the first half, towards the goal on our left.

Conditions were really poor with a driving wind, driving rain , wet pitch and wet sliothar , it would be testament to the determination of both sides to serve up any kind of game in that !

But they did. As early as the 3rd minute ,when Ciara Dunne went down the right wing and put her shot between the posts. She replicated that score three minutes later as the strong wind was hampering Tulloghers attempts to clear the ball and it was aiding Piltowns as the battle was between the two half back lines. But Tullogher were getting to grip with the elements as they attacked twice and scored two points to level the game by the 13th minute.

Our two OSheas, Aoife and Rachel , were to the fore in the midfield battle and when the ball broke to Alice Talbot just outside the Tullogher 45 , she struck a long hopefull pass, that turned into a shot, and turned into a goal as the lengthy drive from our tenacious midfielder deceived the Tullogher goalkeeper and into the net.

Tullogher were calm though as they got the next two points , to narrow the lead back to one point, when as she was mentioned already , Aoife OShea broke forward and struck off her right and put the ball over the bar in the 24th minute. Chloe Holden got on the score sheet with a coolly taken free in the 28th minute, that was cancelled out by the fifth Tullogher point of the half just before Alice Talbot stood over a 45 after a Nicola Phelan shot was deflected wide by a defender, she was probably aware of what happened with her previous long range effort, Alice struck it perfectly towards goal , and again, into the net.

Half time score Piltown 2-04 Tullogher 0-05.

Would it be enough? That was the talk in the stand at half time as the two teams trotted into the dry sanctuary of the Pairc na Ratha dressing rooms.

And we were definitely questioning would it be enough when Tullogher rattled over a 45 and 3 frees - two of them that would be judged as soft - in the opening ten minutes of the half as the wind, the rain and the temperature on the field all intensified and the game swung in their favour. Piltown couldn’t buy a score or a free as they battled to stay ahead as Tullogher went through the gears and made full use of the the yellow warning rated wind that aided them.

We eventually did score as Leah Cooney put a ball over the bar to stem the tide a bit in the 44th minute and we were still two ahead.

Tullogher kept coming, their attacks were as relentless as the wind and rain in the faces of MarieBeth, Chloe, Katelynn, and Sophie , and despite battling themselves to a standstill , Tullogher were now on top and they could smell blood, they scored points in the 46, 51, and 52nd minutes to put them one ahead with time ticking down. But up stepped Edel Long to cap a marvellous display of tackling, passing and work, to claim her point to level the scores in the 55th minute.

Tullogher came again and got the match leading point in the 57th minute , Piltown got two frees as the time slipped into stoppage time, but the distance and the wind ruined any hope of an equalising score and extra time.

Piltown 0-09     Kilmacow/ Slieverue 3-04

There was no gold at the end of the rainbow for our Minors as they were beaten by Kilmacow/Slieverue on a chilly clear evening in Piltown Gaa.

The 14 players took to the field and were shooting towards the clubhouse end , we started brightly and scored the first three points through Leah Cooney , after a great catch and pass from Ella Fogarty, Ella then scored a point of her own , and then Leah again after a pass from Emma OShea.

Three points up after 15 minutes and were great value for it , as our backs worked really hard to keep out the visitors dangerous forward 5.

The visitors got their first score from a free scored by Ella Costello in the 18th minute as they struggled to create scoring chances. Kate Farrell then kept them out when they did get through with a fab triple save in the 19th minute. The ball was worked around and down to Ella and again , she made no mistake and rose a white flag. Her sister Brid then copied her and got a white flag for herself as our forwards took their chances. But then Kilmacow/Slieverue got two chances of their own and took them ,both were goals scored by Aoibhe Rees and Enya Ryan , and they were in the game. This seemed to knock our girls back a bit, and the away side tagged on another two points before half time to leave the score 0-05 to 2-03.

Referee Eddie Crowley blew his whistle to start the second half and it was 14 v 15 now as Kilmacow/Slieverue used their full compliment of players, but it was soon 13 v 15 as Ella was struck across the hand and couldn’t continue after 5 mins.

We were up against it now , our girls dug in and Kaleigh OShea got the first point of the second half, unfortunately the away side got in for another goal in the 43rd minute to strengthen their hold on the game, but once again our girls came right back at them. Leah Cooney again with a point , and then a pointed free to keep us within reach and the lead was down to four points.

Kilmacow/Slieverue , despite their numerical advantage , couldn’t get scores as the home side worked their socks off to try claw their way back into the game. They did get their second score of the half with a point in the 58th minute, when Leah had reduced the lead to 3 after she was set up by Kaleigh.

A great performance full of heart by the home side despite losing players before , and during the game. Well done to Kilmacow/Slieverue.

Senior Camogie League Semi Final -Sat 16 Sept 23.

Piltown Camogie 3-22       James Stephens 1-07

Piltown Power into a League final after dispatching a subdued James Stephens side on an overcast chilly afternoon on the back pitch in Danesfort Gaa . The Kilkenny forward was in fine form throughout the game , scoring 1-05 and contributing massively to her teammates scoring also.

Piltown went into this game slight favourites over their city rivals, but few would have said it would have ended that one sided. Katie Power started the scoring in the 3rd minute as Piltown shot towards the all weather end , although the cross pitch breeze favoured neither sides shooting. Her fellow forward Sophie Holden popped up with her first of the day soon after as The Girls in Black hit the field running, and it took nine minutes for the Village to get their first score from Sophie ODwyer as she calmly struck over a free. Piltown got their first chance from a free soon after , and Heather Phelan made no mistake. Stephens centre forward Niamh Deely , who had a fine game throughout , raised a white flag in the 11th minute to leave a point the difference.

Straight from Aoife Norris’s puck out , the ball was worked through the lines into the hands of Heather Phelan, she hand passed to the onrushing Katie Power, and she bulleted a shot into the net beyond Tara Murphys reach. How would the Village react after that?

Truth be told, they weren’t allowed to react as the Piltown girls kept up their intensity, workmate and flawless shooting. Katie got another point, followed by one over her own shoulder from Niamh Culleton. Piltown were smothering James Stephens now, but the Village were still hurling, still trying, still working. Rachel Leahy was doing her best, and she scored a point in the 14th minute as they tried to get a foothold in the half. But try as hard as they could, it was proving futile as Piltowns passing game was resulting in scores. Katie , again scored a point from out on the left side, on the other side Aoife Doyle accelerating , and scoring from the right and Sophie Holden and Ellen OKeeffe scoring from the centre, it was a very hard task for the Village defence to try to stop the tide.

It got even harder , when once again great interplay between Katie and Heather worked the sliothar to Sophie and she made no mistake for Piltowns second goal in the 23rd minute. Sophie ODwyer clawed one point back in the 24th minute to finish their scoring for the half. But Piltown weren’t finished yet, with points from Ellen , Sinead McCarthy, Sophie and Aoife ending the first half and leaving the score Piltown 2-11 James Stephens 0-04.

The second half got under way and so did the scoring with Heather Phelan scoring her second point. James Stephens won their own puck out, worked the ball into corner forward Anna Doheny , and from the right hand corner just outside the square , she gave Aoife Norris no chance as she threw the sliothar up and batted the ball into the net. Was this the moment to spur on The Village ? Unfortunately for them , the answer was no ,as

Piltown scored 8 points to no score in the next eight minutes to end any thoughts of a comeback. Despite the savage work rate of Hannah Scott and Aoife Cantwell they just couldnt stop the Piltown attack. And then in the 52nd minute Aoife Doyle raced through and put a rocket of a shot into the net , just a minute after Village keeper Tara Murphy pulled off a wonderful save when Katie Power was through on goal, and Murphy got her hurley high to her right and blocked Powers shot. Katie scored two more points in injury time to put Piltown through to a League final against Dicksboro. The final score in Danesfort.

Piltown 0-08      Carrickshock 2-09

Different age group , same clubs , different venue , same scorers , same result as Carrickshock headed back over the hill to Hugginstown with the victory to continue their good win run against Piltown.

This game was , once again , a Grace Farrell vs Amy OShea shootout , and it was OShea that scored first as she pointed from play in the 8th minute. She then raised a green flag in the 11th minute when she broke through and put a low shot past Kate Farrell in the Piltown goal.

Piltown were awakened by that and started playing, Grace had her chance from the 21yd line after Referee Flynn spotted a foul on Faye Maher as she glided towards goal. Grace stood over the sliothar went the same side, but higher this time, but unfortunately too high as her penalty bulleted over the bar, and we were off and running in the 18th minute.

The game was opened up now as the Piltown half back line were battling hard to keep the dangerous trio of Katie and Amy OShea and Millie Gilsenan out.

Grace got one from play and a free to finish the half to leave us trailing 0-03 to 1-02 at half time.

The second half continued as the first half had started, with a slow start from the home side as the visitors got the first score off the stick of Katie OShea. We were unlucky in the 40th minute as a free from Grace struck the left upright and bounced away to safety , but a minute later she made no mistake from another free, and 2 minutes later a point from play to cut the lead to two points again.

Amy OShea then scored two quick fire points of her own before she struck a killer blow ,again, against Piltown. She stole in and tapped home a loose ball inside the 14 for a goal in the 47th minute. Eimear Cummins was unlucky when the ball she pulled on struck the butt of the same left post and went wide.

Amy OShea scored 3 more points , with one from Katie to finish the away sides scoring, with Grace scoring two and Ruby Norris getting the last score of the game for Piltown.

A brave battle, with some great displays on both sides.

Senior Championship rd 3. - Fri 1 Sept 23.

Tullaroan 1-07     Piltown 1-20

Piltown Power past Tullaroan.

A determined Tullaroan were beaten by a well organised , determined and accurate Piltown side on a beautiful evening for this Round 3 clash. The home side started really well as they scored the first point from the hurley of Niamh Dowling from a placed ball on the 45. This was soon followed by a free from the same hurley in the 5th minute as Tullaroan were shooting towards the score board and were putting scores on it. The two Doyle sisters hit back for Piltown , as Aoife lit up the right wing with her pace and accuracy, and sister Aine showed her accuracy from the opposite wing with a free from wide on the left.

Tullaroan were struggling with their puck outs , as the Piltown midfield and half forwards had numbers under the puck out and then hunger to win the breaking ball. It started to pay off after a few initial wides and missed chances before Sophie Holden continued her fine form with her first point of the evening in the 12th minute. Aoife Doyle then got her second with a blistering run down the wing and an elegant strike over the bar.

Piltown were getting into their stride , but Tullaroan were capable of scoring also as Eimear Lanigan replied with a point for the home side in the 14th minute. They were getting a few chances now and Aoife Norris was under pressure at times as Grace Keoghan , Sinead Lanigan and Niamh Dowling were dropping some shots dangerously into the goal mouth just short of a score. Norris dealt with them comfortably though , and with the rock solid Jenni ODea , Laura Norris and Lorraine Long in front of her they held Tullaroan scoreless for the rest of the half.

Piltown weren’t struggling with scores though as they made good use of the channels and the wide pitch. Aoife Doyle scored her third of the night in the 15th minute, Sophie Holden followed that with two in the 16th and 20th minutes, and Katie Power got two before the half time whistle went to leave the score at 0-03 to 0-09 in favour of Piltown

The second half started with Sophie Holden scoring a beauty over her shoulder and it started to look like the away side were going to run away with this game, Rachel Brennan raised a white flag from a run in front of the posts, and then a crucial moment as Sinead Keoghan got the ball inside the 21 and she blasted a low shot into the bottom right corner to give Norris no chance in goal, and suddenly it was a 3 point game. Would this spur Tullaroan on and back into the game?

Katie Power showed her influence though as she received plenty of ball from Kellyann Doyle , turned and ran at defenders. Power was now causing panic as she laid ball off to Heather Phelan, and she made no mistake as she scored a free (Power was fouled) and hand passed to Phelan for two quick points scored in reply to the goal. Katie scored a point of her own as Tullaroan were under savage pressure now, with Aoife Doyle getting her 5th of the night to put the lead back out to 7points after 43 minutes.

It was a great reaction to conceding a goal, the team showed calmness and determination to quell any comeback that Tullaroan might have thought about after getting a goal. Niamh Dowling replied with a point in the 46th minute , but it looked like the game was out of their reach now as Sophie Holden raised another white flag , before Katie Power burst through the middle and buried a low powerful shot into the bottom left giving Ely Holland no chance. Niamh Dowling scored a 45 and a free to finish the Tullaroan scoring for the night and a tally of 5points for herself.

Piltown were still dominating the puck out and the pressure was always on the home sides defence, Leah Cooney got a score in the 55th minute and points from Sophie, Katie and Aine ended the match.

A good display by Piltown , they had to work hard to win ball and their forwards were clinical when in a position to score.

U14 Roinn A championship 1/4 Final     -   Wed 30 Aug 23.

Carrickshock 1-08    Piltown 0-09

Goals win games is an age old saying , and when you score it deep in added time it’s becomes truth as Carrickshock grabbed a victory from the jaws of defeat in Hugginstown on a dull overcast Wednesday evening.

In front of a good crowd, there wasnt much scoring , but it was an end to end game as play swung to and fro throughout the 60 something minutes played.

The visitors struck first as Grace Farrell put her first free over the bar in the 2nd minute, Amy OShea did the same for the home side in the 5th minute , as it was clear from the start that there wasnt going to be much between these two evenly matched teams.

There was danger in all lines of both sides as Amy and Katie OShea were battling with Ruby Norris and Kate Anthony, Hannah Tennyson on Rachel Coady and Saoirse Barry on Ivana Cahill.

It was score for score as we reached half time , Amy OShea and Grace Farrell on 3 frees each. Low on scores maybe, but no way was it low on effort and intensity.

Maurice Flynn started the second half, and we had a new scorer as Katie Oshea got her name on the scoresheet with a well taken score in the 34th minute, back came Piltown and Grace Farrell again as she grabbed a point from play. Then a crucial moment in the game as referee Flynn awarded a penalty for a Piltown player being dragged down, no doubt about it, and no doubt who was going to take it.

Up stepped Grace Farrell , with the ball on the 21, she stood, rose, struck and arrowed the sliothar towards the left hand side of the goal, but Shocks keeper Grainne OShea brilliantly saved it and scooped the ball away. What a moment!

Farrell and OShea traded points in minutes 43 , 44 , 45 and 49 to leave the score at 7 points each in the 56th minute.

It was frantic, as both sides tried to grab the winning point, no one wanted to make a mistake at this crucial time of the game. Would extra time be needed? Maybe not , because in the 58th minute Grace had ice in her veins as she calmly stuck her 6th free of the game over the bar and Piltown were back in front. Amy OShea had similar ice in her veins as she replied and levelled the game with her 5th free in the 59th minute.

It really was fever pitch now as we wondered about the fast fading light and the prospect of extra time, but before that thought had passed through our minds Grace Farrell burst down the pitch in the 60th minute , took aim and launched the sliothar over the bar from 30yrds. Was that it ? Shur it must be ! Time is up, Cmon ref !

Goals win games though, and as Amy OShea got the ball in hand on the 21, turned inside, it looked like it was going to be level again, but Amy thought differently, and sent a rasper towards the goal, it went just to the left of Rachel Tennyson’s raised hurley , and under the crossbar. And as it hit the net there were celebrations on the pitch. As Rachel pucked it back out, the refs final whistle went to end a pulsating second half.

Senior camogie Championship rd2. Sunday 27 Aug 23.

Piltown 5-17    Barrow Rangers 0-09.

The ‘Piltown Show’ was on Saturday , and there was also another one on Sunday as the Senior team put on a fine display to see off a gutsy Barrow Rangers team in a Round 2 clash. There was a solemn minute’s silence held prior to throw in for those affected by the tragedy in Clonmel.

Piltown played towards the road goal in the first half , and they were motoring as soon as the 2nd minute as Sophie Holden got possession inside the 21 , beat her marker and blasted a shot into the bottom right from her position on the left. It was the kind of start any team would like , but Barrow Rangers struck back straight away with a point. Piltown were full of confidence though and playing a quick moving style of camogie as they blitzed the away side and they almost had the game won before the team from Paulstown scored again. Aine Doyle scored two points , Sophie got another and Heather Phelan scored a free with her usual accuracy. In minute 11 it was the time for the second green flag of the game for Sophie Holden , as she really came alive today with her tight turns and pace used to great affect.

Heather, Ellen OKeeffe , Katie Power and Sophie also had the white flag raised before Roisin Breen scored a point from a free in the 20th minute to leave the score 2-07 to 0-02.

Piltown were playing some slick camogie and Rangers struggled to contain them , with the tireless running of Aoife and Kellyann Doyle and Katie Power proving hard to contain in the middle third and the movement and shooting of Heather and Sophie upfront.

Aoife Doyle continued her scoring form with a nice score in the 24th minute. Heather finished our scoring in the first half with a point and then a goal of her own that was soaked with an inter county style of build up play , as Aoife Norris hit Kellyann Doyle from a puck out , Kellyann found Katie Power, she burst past two defenders and laid it off to Heather, into her hand , and then into the net. A class goal. Roisin Breen finished the half with three points , 2 from frees.

Half time score: Piltown 3-10 Barrow Rangers 0-05.

It was that forward duo scoring again at the start of the second half as Phelan and Power pointed from play. Breen scored a free for Rangers. As the amusements from Saturdays show were dismantled in the background , Sundays show was still in full flow.

The nail was driven in further by Heather Phelan who scored two goals in 2minutes to complete her trio of goals by the 41st minute. Rangers toiled away and raised their intensity with some tough tackling to try gain a foothold in the game but it was to no avail as Piltown motored on , with white flags raised by Phelan three times, Leah Cooney and Katie Power , with Roisin Breen scoring two 45s and a free in reply.

A good performance and a welcome victory.

Piltown 1-10    Dicksboro  0-18

Same clubs, same score, different teams, different day , same result , as the visitors from Kilkenny city beat the home side in a game that Piltown could have gotten a positive result despite the away sides dominance.

Piltown played with the wind towards the ‘Showfield’ end in the first half and Edel Long started the scoring with two points in two minutes , before Caoimhe Carroll and Aisling Browne levelled for the visitors. Heather Phelan continued her great scoring form with a 45 and a point from play in the 8th and 9th minutes to put Piltown back in front, but Dicksboro then hit 3 points in a row via the Hurley of the impressive number 14 ,Niamh ODonoghue , 2 from play and 1 free.

It was a battle for the upper hand as both teams took the lead , then the other did, as Aoife OShea scored a fine point on the run before Sinead Carroll scored the final point of the half to leave the score Piltown 0-05 Dicksboro 0-06.

The Boro now had the breeze but as she did in the first half , Edel Long opened the scoring to level the scores, and straight from their puck out , Niamh ODonoghue got possession and scored easily from around the 45. Emer Phelan got her name on the scoresheet next , as the away side started to move through the gears. Our own impressive number 14 , Heather Phelan then struck a quick two points to level it again. Dicksboro struck back again , as ODonoghue was becoming more influential and herself and Sinead Carroll grabbed points to go one ahead. It was that kind of game, tit for tat ,you score , we score. But by the time Edel Long got her 4th of the game in the 42nd minute, the Boro had stretched the lead to 4 points, and it was slipping away from Piltown. But had it ? It looked like maybe it was game on again as the ball dropped to Heather Phelan on the edge of the square unmarked, and as Rachael Egan rushed to her, the ball went past Egan and into the net.. 1 point game ??? No, the full forward had hand passed it into the net , a massive let off for Dicksboro. And they took advantage as they tapped on the points and Piltown looked downhearted as they didn’t score for 13 minutes. And when Heather pointed a free in the 57th minute , it cut the lead to 7. Heather did get her goal though in the 60th minute. A deserved win for the away side ,and a good game between two sides that will be , no doubt, there or thereabouts at the latter stages of the championship. Final score - Piltown 1-10 Dicksboro 0-18.

Senior camogie Championship rd1 - Saturday 19 August 23

Piltown 1-10 Dicksboro 1-15

A much anticipated clash in a rain soaked Piltown as the Boro kept their winning streak going against Piltown. It was a closer game than the last meeting in the Championship semi final last year, but the victors were the same.

Dicksboro were quick out of the blocks as they got the first four points of the game through Rachel Dowling , Aoife Prendergast and Orla Hanrick as they appeared to settle into their plan of flowing movement , hand pass to the player in space and take your score.

Katie Power got Piltown first point in the 13th minute, and this was followed up by an amazing piece of skill from full forward Heather Phelan when a ball into the danger area from Aine Doyle was volleyed up into the air , and then struck over her shoulder into the net in the 15th minute to level the game.

A great boost to the slight underdogs, but a team such as Dicksboro took it in their stride and simply worked it up the field straight away , the ball came to flying forward Rachel Dowling , and she gave Aoife Norris no chance as she struck it low to the bottom right corner. 1-01 to 1-04 after 15 minutes.

The weather conditions in the first half didn’t help the players as the cross field wind and rain resulted in a lot of fumbles and dropped passes but little frees awarded and Jenny Clifford got her first of the day in the 18th minute to stretch the lead to 4 points , and Aoife Prendergast put a free over the bar in the 20th minute to leave Piltown struggling for a reply.

Ellen OKeeffe started a reply though as she got a point , then Aine Doyle did similar, and that was matched by Katie Power to bring it back to a two point difference. Dowling finished the scoring for the half in the 27th minute to leave the scores at half time Piltown 1-04 Dicksboro 1-07.

Aoife Doyle opened the scoring in the second half for Piltown , as the sun made an appearance for the first time in the game. The game then went 10 minutes without a score as there was a couple of injuries and the momentum suffered. The half back line of Alice, Emer and Emily was under savage pressure as the running game of the Boro and the movement of the two Clifford’s and the presence of Prendergast at centre forward was gaining the upper hand. Amy Clifford ended the scoring drought when she raised the white flag in the 41st minute after a free from distance struck the upright bounced out into play and was put over by the Boro number 13. Piltown hadn’t scored since Aoife Doyle scored in the 32nd minute , and she did it again in the 42nd.

It was a two point lead now ,but two needless frees on the 45 handed Orla Hanrick the opportunities she relishes, and she made no mistake with both. Aine Doyle replied with a free of her own in the 53rd minute , Jenny Clifford added one for the Boro in reply, despite Boros advantage possession wise the game wasn’t out of sight yet. Piltown just couldn’t get a couple of points in a row to get near enough.

Aoife Doyle scored another two points , with Katie finishing off our scoring deep into injury time.

A great competitive game between two skilful sides.

We had the wind in the first half and took advantage of it and went in at half time in front.

We scored two points early in the second half , but the wind proved to be a great help as the visitors ran out winners by two points.

Well done to all girls and coaches..

Junior ACL Semi Final     -   7 July 23.

John Lockes / Bennettsbridge 0-05  Piltown Camogie 1-15

Piltown march on to a Kilkenny River Court Hotel ACL final after we overcame the challenge of J Lockes/Bennettsbridge in a chilly Bennettsbridge.

Piltown Captain Emily McCarthy chose to play against the strong breeze, nearly a wind, in the first half and the home side took full advantage of the breeze as they scored three points in as many minutes from the hurley of Aoibhe Ryan , and two from Laura Phelan. The away side replied through the flying Ciara Dunne ,who had a fine game throughout on the left wing.

After the initial flurry of points from the home side, there then was a lull as both sides got to grip with the breeze, and how to utilise the spare player they both had at the back.

Heather Phelan brought the gap back to the minimum as she stood over a dead ball and place it confidently between the uprights in the 12minute.

Aoibhe Ryan then scored her second point of the half as she made no mistake from a central position in the 13th minute. That was to be their final score of the half as Piltown replied through Leah Cooney, equalised through Ciara Dunne and then went ahead in the 26th minute through Heather Phelan to leave the scores at half time :

John Lockes/Bennettsbridge 0-04. Piltown 0-05.

We were happy with that, leading at half time , and having the breeze in the second half is always a bonus. But Piltown had reason to be wary after been beaten by this opposition back in May.

Wary maybe, but not afraid. And we started well with Leah Cooney, Edel Long, and another two from Heather adding, and stretching , the lead by the 37th minute. Laura Phelan got her third of the game from a free in the 41st minute but the home side were struggling to create the chances as Emily McCarthy , Sarah’s Norris and Tobin were on top in defence and clearing ball out to a dominant Lorna OShea who was ably assisted by her two sisters Aoife and Rachel.

It was really a dominant display throughout, as Piltown dominated the puck outs from both ends and were able to set up attacks from the half backs through to the half forward line. The interplay from Cooney and Phelan was a highlight as both showed some great fielding and hand pass ability to set up attacks.

Heather Phelan kept the scoreboard moving with points from play and from frees, with Ciara Dunne and Leah Cooney also putting the ball over the bar.

Then the killer blow as Lorna OShea strode forward and struck a speculative shot, maybe she meant it ? Of course she did because it nestled in the top right corner of the net to raise a green flag. It was the score her performance deserved ,as she continues to get back to the form she was in before the dreaded knee injury struck her.

Overall a deserved victory , and worth a place in the League Final.

Minor ACL - Fri 30 June 23.

Kilmacow/Slieverue 4-11   Piltown 1-10

It looks like an easy win for the home side, but it could have been much closer, or even a different result if goal chances were taken.

Playing with a stiff breeze under grey clouds Brid Fogarty got the scoring underway, with Emma OShea , usually in the half back line but playing further forward due to some players missing , adding another in the 9th minute. The home side were clinical with some great scores and ended up with only 2 wides in the first half!

We weren’t so clinical through as some gilt edged changes went a begging as we struck the cross bar and the butt of the post as the home side scored goals in the 8th , 24th and 27th minutes.

Leah Cooney was keeping us in it with points from play and from a 45, Ella Fogarty also adding one to leave the half time score :

Kilmacow/Slieverue 3-06 Piltown 0-08

The second half resumed after a shower of rain to wet the grass but not soften the pitch or quench the action on the pitch. The home side continued to tip over the points whilst Piltown continued to miss goal chances. We finally converted one as Leah Cooney burst through the centre and her shot gave the keeper no chance.Emma OShea added her second , and Leah scored our last score in the 54th minute to cut the lead to 6pts, but KilmacowSlieverue dashed the hopes of a comeback with a goal and a point soon after to wrap up a 10point victory.

Senior ACL Quarter Final   -  Weds 28 June 23

Windgap 1-09   Piltown 1-07

Windgap made full use of home advantage, and took advantage of the breeze to come out on top and progress to the semi finals after an entertaining 60 mins on a sunny evening.

The home side outscored us by 1-06 to 0-03 in the second half to overturn a four point deficit at half time.

Piltown won the toss , and elected to play with the breeze. And we started quickly, as straight from the throw in Lorraine Long delivered the ball into the full forward line, Heather Phelan got it into hand , turned and blasted it to the net to raise the green flag after 30seconds. What a start for the away side.

It was just the start any team would want, but Windgap came straight back up and got their first score with a point from Sontae Jackson in the second minute.

Heather Phelan stood over a free in the sixth minute on the right hand side at the 45, and she made no mistake to put 3points between the teams again. Emily Mccarthy, playing in a midfield role, then stretched it further with a nice score from outside the 45 as she put it over the black spot in the 16th minute.

Then , half forward number 12 , Ciara OShea got her first score of the game as she got the ball from a Piltown puck out , and put it back over the bar. And to complete the trio of points within 3 minutes , Piltowns number 12 , Lorraine Long got her own point from straight down the middle.

It was turning into a battle for the ball after an initial 15 mins of scoring, as markers got tighter, and there was less space for forwards to get possession. Emer Long denied Sontae Jackson what looked like a certain goal in the 18th minute when Jackson was free and unmarked , but Long got across and blocked her shot.

Leah Cooney did get free though , and put it over the bar off her left side from out on the right hand side in the 20th minute. Ciara OShea then ended the scoring for the first half with her second point in the 24th minute.

Would a half time lead of 1-04 to 0-03 be enough for Piltown? Time would tell.

The second half started, and much like the end of the first half, both sides had to work very hard to create any scoring chances. The workrate was increased by both sides as Piltown started to struggle as Windgap turned the screw.

It took Windgap seven minutes to score as Denise Foley scored from in front of the posts, and was quickly followed by a converted 45 from Ciara OShea. Lorna OShea scored a point in reply as she broke free down the right and as her pace got her free , she put the sliothar over the bar.

Ciara OShea got another opportunity from a placed ball , as the free count increased against Piltown with some soft frees. OShea put two over the bar from placed balls , and one from play in the space of 5 minutes , as the tide turned in Windgaps favour. The breeze was definitely a factor and was highlighted perfectly in the 50th minute , as Catherine Foley struck a free from her own 45 and it travelled like a missile through the air, passed through the 8 hurleys held in the air trying to block its path, it bounced 10 yards in front of Mairebeth Kirby in the goal , struck the crossbar, and landed 15 yards out the field. It was another near miss that kept Piltown alive in the game.

But that was soon to change as Sontae Jackson got her hand on another loose ball inside the 21 yard line, and unmarked in a central position , she made no mistake with a goal to send her side 2 points ahead with 9 minutes left. Soon after , Ciara OShea got another point from another free to stretch the lead to three points . Heather Phelan got a point from a free on the 54th minute to narrow the gap, and despite a very near miss from Lorna OShea, Piltown could not catch the home side.

Junior ACL ¼ Final     - Thur 15 June 23

Piltown 2-15    Graiguenamanagh 1-13

A game of two halves in Piltown in beautiful, warm sunny conditions on Thursday night. It was sunny and warm for us on the sideline, but the players would probably have settled for an evening a bit cooler.

Even the water breaks in each half couldn’t cool down the game as both teams took control of a half each and it was an entertaining game right to the end. It turned out that it was won in the first half by Piltown after a great display , and it was nearly won by Graignamanagh in the second as they hunted them down.

Piltown played towards the Showgrounds into the setting sun for the first half, but the sun didn’t seem to affect them as attacking duo Heather Phelan and Chloe Holden both grabbed two points each by the 8th minute after Aisling Prendergast of Graig had scored the first point in the 3rd minute.

Heather was involved again in the 10th minute as she laid off a superb handpass to the flying Ciara Dunne and Ciara buried the ball to the net. It was one way traffic in the game now , with Edel Long and Chloe ,from a free, extending the lead , with just a point from Sinead Lanigan Graigs only other score by the time ref Willie Kearney blew for a well deserved, and needed, water break.

The break didn’t put the home team off their stride with Heather Phelan continuing her fine form with another two points , and Edel Long getting her second from a hop ball after a contested point. At this stage the away side couldn’t match the intensity and running of the home side and when a long range shot went into the net via a Graig player in the 28th minute , they looked in big trouble. But Aisling Prendergast and Hannah Moran scored a point apiece before Edel Long finished the scoring to leave the score at half time : Piltown 2-10 Graignamanagh 0-04.

It was a massive lead at half time , and surely it’s a good as won?

Graig didn’t think so though, and straight away from a free near halfway , Aisling Prendergast was cool in the heat as she put the ball over the black spot, this was followed by another from Sinead Lanigan, and then another point from Prendergast from a 45 this time. It was one way traffic again towards the Showgrounds , but this time it was the team in green that were on top.

There was a massive increase in intensity from the visitors and Piltown couldn’t match it as Prendergast scored another two points and one from Alicia Barrett was eating into Piltowns lead then Maire beth pulled off a great save in the 38th minute to deny Graig a certain goal. But there was no let off in the 41st minute as Sinead Lanigan broke through and beat Maire beth to raise a green flag.

Graig had scored 1-05 to no score since half time and they had all the momentum, until Nicola Phelan scored a point just before the second water break to maybe steady the nerves,

Would the water break help Piltown get a foothold back in the game? It looked like it would , as Chloe Holden stepped up with two points, but still Graignamanagh chipped away at the lead. With Aisling Prendergast still scoring and Sinead Lanigan also raising flags. But Piltowns first half haul looked like being enough , as Heather and Chloe ended the scoring to confirm a place in the ACL semi final.

A fabulously entertaining game, on a fabulous evening.

Junior ACL    -   Sunday 21 May 23.

John Lockes/ Bennettsbridge 1-14    Piltown 1-06

We travelled up to Callan on an overcast warm Sunday morning to take on the combined team from mid county.

A lot of this team had played a game on Friday evening and the heavy legs were noticeable as the Home side took the upper hand as they scored the first four points of the game through Hannah Keher and 3 from Megan Walsh.

It took 14minutes for the away side to score and it was from Leah Cooney, this was soon bettered as Ciara Dunne received a pass from fellow forward Heather Phelan, and Ciara buried it past Dominique Delaney in the JL/BB goal , to level the game.

The home side were direct with their passing and touch, and they were efficient with their scores as Megan Walsh added another two , and Aoibhe Ryan got one , and just before half time , Caoimhe Shiel stole in to score a goal. Piltown hadn’t scored since their goal in the 14th minute , and went in behind at the break 1-08 to 1-01.

That scoring drought continued into the second half but Megan Walsh continued scoring , with Vivienne Holmes also scoring in the 40th min , before Chloe Holden struck over the ball for a point , and that was soon added to by Heather Phelan in the 45th minute .

Piltown were on top now in this phase of the game , but unfortunately some wayward shooting was leaving the home sides lead intact. Aoife OShea did get a shot on target though, as she soloed down the right side and put it over the black spot. Leah Cooney got her second point in the 52nd minute, as Piltown kept battling , despite the heavy legs and there was no lack of effort at all.

Megan Ryan got a point from centre back , and the other Megan ,at centre forward , Walsh scored her ninth of the game to finish out the scoring.

A comfortable victory just looking at the scoreboard, but Piltown were on top for a lot of the second half, and it should have been a lot closer if not for some poor wides.

Well done to our u8s who had their first blitz of the year on Saturday morning in Piltown. A special congratulations to the girls who had their first day ever in a Piltown Jersey!

All of the players put in a big effort and we were all very proud of them.

Thanks to Emma and Emily, two of our minors, who gave up their Saturday morning to referee. Great role models in our club.

Thanks also to those who provided the lovely refreshments afterwards.

Senior ACL Friday  -  19 May 23

Piltown 1-07   Dicksboro 2-17

It’s never easy against the Boro , and it was no different on Friday evening when they left with the points after a fairly comfortable victory over Piltown. The visitors were ruthless with their point taking throughout the game, and their excellent pass and run game was admirable.

The away side wasted no time as they scored two points in the first two mins from Caoimhe DunneDowling and Rachel Dowling , Piltown retorted with two of their own from Sinead McCarthy and from last weeks keeper, Heather Phelan.

Ellen oKeeffe got a point and Rachel Dowling got her second as the home were at this stage looking comfortable.

Half forward Edel Long, then scored what was to be the home sides last score of the half in the 14th minute to edge Piltown ahead. Aobha OGorman restored parity with a point before a slightly contentious moment in the 16th minute.

Issy Egam stood over a free in midfield, and as she struck it towards goal there was a midair tussle to block the ball, no one did though, and it bounced on the ground and agonisingly past MarieBeth Kirby on goal. Did some one touch it? Was it a square ball? Did it go straight in from the free? Ref Willie Kearney ruled it was the latter and gave the goal for Dicksboro. It was harsh on the Piltown keeper and defence who, up until then , had dealt quite well with the pacy , skilful Boro attack. The excellent Orla Hanrick took over then as she scored 4 points in a row between the 18th and 27th minutes.

Half Time score Piltown 0-04 Dicksboro 1-08

Straight from the throw in ,Piltown got a free near the half way line, Sinead McCarthy stood over it facing the Road goal, she struck it towards the Boro goal, but short. Then up popped Heather Phelan, ball in hand, ran towards goal and buried it to cut the deficit to 4points now! Would they drive on now? Maybe they would as Ellen OKeeffe took the wheel and scored another point to cut it to 3. And MarieBeth pulled off a great double save in the 38th minute.

The brakes were soon pressed by the away side though as Amy Clifford and Rachel Dowling scored a pair of classy points, followed by scores from Orla Hanrick and Caoimhe Dunne Dowling. Piltown stuck to the task though , as the excellent Emer Long had a great tussle with Dunne Dowling throughout, and the Half forward line of Edel , Ellen and Sinead (who all scored) never stopped working back as well as forward.

Then in the 52min , Amy Clifford struck a speculative shot crossbar height. The keepers nightmare height. They are so hard to judge, and unfortunately it went beneath the crossbar and into the net.

The away side kept tipping away on the scoreboard to see out the game.

Senior All County League -  Sunday 14 May 23.

Piltown 3-09   James Stephens 1-11

Goals win games is a well worn saying.

And in fairness, its usually correct, and it was to be correct here in Piltown on a muggy, overcast morning that spilt some rain onto two committed teams.

Piltown got the perfect start as a great move resulted in Leah Cooney raising the green flag after 5minutes from a good pass from Niamh Culleton , who had received a pass to hand from Laura Norris.

You couldn’t ask for a better start really, and that was added to from a free by Sinead McCarthy in the 9th minute.

The Village weren’t panicking though, and their number 12 stood over a free in the 10th minute and confidently put it between the uprights , and she scored again when she picked up a loose pass around the 45 and put it back over the bar. Aine Doyle scored her first of the day when she picked up a loose puck out, (the puck outs were a problem for James Stephens as Piltown won a lot of them in the first half ), and put the lead back to three points after 15 minutes.

That seemed to kick start a scoring spree as Piltown scored 6 points in as many minutes, while the Village came back with a goal from an under struck 45 that was picked up by Tara Murphy , and she gave stand in keeper Heather Phelan no hope from close range.

A lot of seemingly scorable wides from the home side were keeping The Village in touch and they scored another 2 frees to leave the half time score – Piltown 1-07 James Stephens 1-04.

Its not that common to score a goal in the first minute of each half, but Niamh Culleton made it happen as she broke through and from almost on the end line, she looped the ball over Hannah Larkins head and into the net. A great start to the second half from the home side, and Aine Doyle added another point to further stretch the lead, until Rachel Leahy and Ciara Delaney raised white flags for the visitors to keep the game within their reach.

The wide count in this half was lower than the first , but the frees for James Stephens were mounting up, and counting up, as they scored the next 4 points from frees from the hurley of number 12.

Piltown kept driving on though. With Emer Long leading the charge from centre back, and Laura Norris from full back, Ellen OKeeffe wasn’t as prominent as she usually is, but she still got a point from play.

At the 50 minute mark, the lead was four points and the game was well in the melting pot as James Stephens turned up the pressure.

But how the game pivoted on two incidents.

The first one was when a James Stephens shot hit the upright high, and bounced low , there was a mighty pull, a narrow miss and the ball was cleared down the field by Emily McCarthy.

The second one was when Aine Doyle got the ball about 50 yards from goal out near the touchline and hit a speculative shot towards the goal. It was too short to go over the bar, and looked destined to land in the keepers lámh , but the greasy wet sliotar slipped from her hand, and somehow landed in the net.

This put 5 between the teams, and Tara Murphys second point of the game brought the game to an end with the final score : Piltown 3-09 James Stephens 1-11.

It was an entertaining game, with plenty for both sides to work on for the rest of the season.

Tullaroan 2-03    Piltown 4-16.

On an evening that started off warm and sunny , and ended up with cloud and rain, there was a match in between. Piltown travelled north to take on Tullaroan in an ACL clash on a lushly sodded pitch.

The away side were out out the traps first with Niamh Culleton getting the first point of the game , quickly followed by Ellen OKeeffe who scored her first and second points in quick succession, and it was Ellen’s shot that was saved and spilled by Tullaroan keeper Victoria OFlynn, and that spill was put in the net by the alert Chloe Holden.

Tullaroan were tackling hard but the fast running off the shoulder game that Piltown were using was hard to stop. With the half backs and half forwards especially doing well marauding forward with the ball , or in support of a team mate with the ball.

Tullaroan scored a fortuitous goal in the 13 min as the ball dropped under the crossbar to deceive MarieBeth on goal. Piltown then scored their second goal immediately as the rampaging Ellen again caused chaos as she ran at goal , and Sophie Holden was there to finish it to the net in the 14th minute. It was one way traffic now as points from Lorraine Long , and Leah Cooney were put over the bar , as were 3 points from frees by Sinead McCarthy.

Half time - Tullaroan 1-02 Piltown 2-10

The second half continued in the same vein, as Piltown scored a point from a great powerful run from Emer Long , who was superb throughout at centre back. Half time saw the introduction of Heather Phelan and she was soon on the score sheet as she put over 3 frees to extend the lead.

A few players went off injured, including our own Sophie Holden , and that killed the momentum that the away side had , and the game petered out towards the final few minutes.

A great win on the road with a high tally of scores from 9 different scorers. You have to be pleased with that !

Final score - Tullaroan 2-03 Piltown 4-16.

Minor ACL    - Fri 21 April 23.

Piltown 1-07    Mullinavat 1-07.

A game that ended in a draw, after both sides seemed to have it won with time running out, and no one could argue that it wasnt the correct result.

The scoring started in the 5th minute when Ambar Laherty struck for the visitors, we struck back when former full back , now turned full forward got possession of a free from Sophie Long turned and put it over the bar at the Complex end. On a sunny still evening the action on the pitch was fast and frenetic, as both midfield and half lines fought for the upper hand, with the Ambar Laherty against Aoife OShea and Seána Davis against Aine Kirwan looked to be where the match would be lost or won.

Mullinavat struck next and this time it was a green flag, as Ruth Hennessy broke away from Lia OBrien and Katelyn Moore and headed for goal from the right wing and as she bore down on Kate Farrell in the Piltown she pulled on it and it went agonisingly over the line despite Kates best attempts to stop it.

Hennessy scored again as she put the ball over the bar in the 19th minute and Aine Woods joined the scorers when she pointed in the 21st minute after she got possession from a sideline cut.

Piltown were awarded a free out on the right wing in the 25th minute, and Ella Fogarty drove it confidently between the uprights to leave the half time score Piltown 0-02 Mullinavat 1-03

Mullinavat were scoring again after two mins when Kerrie-Ann OConnor found room on the right and scored a point. Were the home side struggling? After that score you might start thinking they were, but Piltown scored the next five points with Ella getting two points, her sister Brid Fogarty scored another, and then Eimear Commins scored a goal as she followed in a long shot that Beth OKeeffe could only parry, and Eimear swept it home. The home side were now one point up, and now you would think are Mullinavat struggling?

The battle was still being fought in midfield , and with Sarah Norris put back at centre back, she looked more comfortable and broke down lots of Vat attacks. Their excellent midfielder Ambar Laherty then scored two points in quick succession to put the Vat back in front after 53 minutes, it was swinging their way again.

Then the tireless dogged midfielder Aoife OShea got the score her performance deserved as she equalised with a point in the 55th minute. It now came down to who would score, Who would make a mistake, Who was the bravest!

And once again it looked like a full forward would win a game, as Ruth Hennessy scored a point right on the 60minutes, was that it ? Was she the match winner.

But no, unfortunately for her , despite scoring 1-02 on the night, we had a brave one of our own. It was Ella Fogarty , as she stood over a 45 as the game slipped deep into added on time.

No bother to Ella, as she was the calmest in the grounds and drove it high and mighty over the bar . What an end to a very competitive entertaining game.

U14 Lge     -     19 April 23.

Piltown 3-05   Carrickshock 1-07.

On a beautiful Wednesday evening, Carrickshock travelled over the hill and down to us to take on our U14s.

Piltown played with the strong breeze in the first half towards the Belline House end.

And the home side started as strong as the breeze with Siobhan Aylward pouncing onto the rebound from a long range Grace Farrell shot after it was saved by Gráinne OShea in the Shocks goal after 3mins.

Two minutes later the green flag was raised beside Gráinne again as Ruby Norris broke down the left wing, turned for goal, and shot mid height to the left.

It was a whirlwind start for the home side, and the visitors were struggling for scores despite the best efforts of Emer Rossiter, Grace Lehart and Katie OShea.

It was turning into a battle for possession between the two 45 yard lines, as Piltown seemed to have gotten the match ups correct. This was clear in midfield with Ruby Norris and Rachel Coady battling away and the half forwards where Kate Fogarty was working especially hard, and the half back line, Saoirse Barry and Clodagh McCarthy battled hard.

Because of the battle for the upper hand going on, scores were hard to come by, and once again it was Ruby that got the third goal of the half from out wide on the wing.

That seemed to kick-start the forwards, and also the game, back to life as Carrickshock then scored the next 3 points in the next 4minutes, before Ruby got a point from a free. The always reliable Grace Farrell got two points from play to close out the half with the score Piltown 3-03 Carrickshock 0-03.

With the breeze at their backs, you would expect the team in green to come back at Piltown, and they did. Amy OShea, with number 14 on her back, scored the next 2 points from placed balls, and then broke away from Kate Anthony and buried the ball to Rachel Tennyson left to reduce the lead to 4 points with ten mins left.

It looked like Shocks were building up a head of steam and were Piltown wobbling? Rachel pulled off a great save in the 52nd minute to deny Amy OShea as she went through on goal.

Once again it was Grace that steadied the ship for Piltown as she pointed a 45 and then another point from play.

Amy OShea scored another free in the 57th minute, and that was matched by Katie OShea to finish the scoring.

A four point victory for Piltown, and it was the right result on balance of play. A great performance all round from two evenly matched teams.

U14a League    -   Mon 27 Mar 23

Piltown 2-08  Rower/Inistioge  3-05

Our 14s started off the League season on Monday evening as they welcomed the girls from Rower Inistioge to Piltown.

Captain Rachel Tennyson chose to shoot into the goal under the trees, and ref Wilie Kearney got the game underway. Once again, as it was so often last season, Grace Farrell scored , with a point in the 7th minute.

Two minutes later , she broke down the left wing and buried the ball in the far corner of the net to raise the first green flag of the night. It was a great start for the home side , and they were playing well. It took the Rower a while to settle, and soon they were on the scoreboard as Muireann Kenny scored a point from a free in the 12th minute. It was turning into a great game as both sides fought for the upper hand. Meabh Hearne made a goal saving tackle, and that was followed by a great save by Rachel to keep the visitors out.

The Rower equalised with a point in the 19th minute, and there was a flurry of scores to end the half. Muireann Kenny scored another great free from out near the right sideline in the 27th minute, matched by a surging run down the middle and put over the bar by Kate Anthony in the 28th minute, then the away side hit the front as they scored a goal after some hesitancy in the Piltown defence.

That didn’t last long as two frees and a 45 , all scored by centre forward Grace Farrell left the half time scores
 Piltown 1-05 Rower Inistioge 1-03

The second half started as the first half finished as Aoibhinn Downey scored a goal in the first minute ! Ruby Norris replied for Piltown with a point to level the game again , as the game swung from end to end, with the pace of Kate Anthony and Ruby Norris being matched by Meabh and Muireann Kenny and Ciara and Sophie Bolger as the running game was used by both sides.

Grace showed her skill from placed balls with a free in the 35th min and a 45 in the 37th min to put Piltown ahead again. The Rower kept coming though with Muireann Kenny , once again, scoring a point from play and she played the killer pass into Aoibhinn Downey who gave Rachel no chance as she grabbed her second goal to make the score 1-08 to 3-04 and they took the lead again.

It was then the turn of Aoife Malone to change the game as she grabbed a half chance and turned it into a goal to put Piltown back into the lead in the 56th minute. Was it enough ?

It wasn’t to be, as once again the Rowers number 11 Muireann Kenny struck the ball confidently over the bar in the 59th minute to level the scores.

A great game, that either side could have won, and neither side deserved to lose.

Well done to both sides on a great display.

Piltown 1-11    Emeralds 2-07

A victory by the minimum margin always feels better than a big win somehow, and you feel you had to work harder to get it. That was certainly the case on the back pitch in Piltown last evening as the Minors dug deep to overcome a gallant Emeralds side.

A young panel containing a lot of u16s took the victory with a last minute point from the hurley of Ella Fogarty.

It started with another of the Fogarty sisters, Brid, as she raised the white flag in the 5th minute to equalise after Katie Mai Broderick pointed for Emeralds.

On quite a heavy pitch , the running game was once again to the fore as Piltowns Aine Kirwan and Aoife OShea had a battle with Mary Cussen and Aoife Kavanagh , and Kavanagh was going well, as she got 2 points in the 9th and 19th minute.

Leah Cooney , a member of the Kilkenny Minor panel , was also going well as she struck a 45 confidently over the bar in the 8th min, and one from play straight after it. Then it was a case of game keeper turning game poacher, as long time full back Rachel OKeeffe got a point from full forward in the 15th min.

Aoife Kavanagh struck again in the 19th min after Leah Cooney got another point from a great pass from Aine Kirwan, Kate Farrell in the Piltown goal had a couple of saves to make in the half , and right on half time Katelyn Moore as Emeralds were through on goal. Emeralds got the final point of the half to leave the score at 5 points to 4 in favour of the home side.

The second half turned into the Cooney show (ending up with 1-07) as Leah turned on the skill and the scores. She scored 2 points in the first 5mins, making one on her own, the other from a good pass from Kaleigh OShea.

Once again Emeralds replied through free taker Aoife Kavanagh , and then a goal to put them into the lead through Ella Minogue. Was the ‘scoring goal’ going to prove critical in the game again?

Leah Cooney had other ideas however, as she soloed down the left wing and bulleted the ball past Niamh Queally in the Emeralds goal in the bottom right corner. Emeralds fought back with a point in the 41st minute to bring the lead back to a point. Cooney put it back up to a three point lead with another 2 points by the 49th minute , as the game stepped up a level even as the girls were tiring on a heavy pitch and intense game. Eimear Commins was unlucky with some half chances and Cliona Carey and Rachel Phelan were working hard to keep the Piltown girls scoreless. And they nearly kept Ella Fogarty scoreless until the 51st minute when she put the ball over the black spot to end a great passing move that started with flying wing back Sarah Norris, who fed Leah Cooney in the middle, and she laid it off to Ella .But once again the Away side just wouldn’t give up, as Niamh Cleere put the ball past Kate to leave us one point ahead on the 52nd minute.

The game could have gone either way, but it looked like it might be a draw when Aoife Kavanagh scored another point from a free with two minutes left. But Ella , whose battle with Lilly Cleere on the wing was a highlight throughout the game, kept her composure when she got free in the last minute to get the winning point.

A great performance from the whole panel , against a strong skilful Emeralds side.

Final Score : Piltown 1-11 Emeralds 2-07.

Leinster League 2023 – Quarter Final.        Thursday 16 March 23

Piltown 0-09     Windgap 3-05

On a wet Thursday evening , our involvement in the 2023 Leinster League came to an end at the hands of our neighbours Windgap after a competitive game underlights and under showers. We started brightly with Ellen OKeeffe putting the ball over the bar at the complex end in the first minute, with Sinead McCarthy following it up with a free in the 3rd minute. We were playing well and the half backs and forwards of both sides working hard on a pitch where the going was soft to heavy in places.
The midfield duo of Windgap , Nathania Jackson and Deirdre Purcell , were causing lots of problems for the home side with their constant running with the ball at pace, and these runs caused fouls, and that led to Deirdre Purcell scoring Windgaps first score from a placed ball in the 5th minute. Lorraine Long and Chloe Power had their hands full with them, as did centre back Emer Long with Windgaps Molly Walsh as the centre forward scored a point in the 7th minute to level the scores.
There was plenty of action in the middle third as the foul count rose, and this helped the away side hit the front through Deirdre Purcell as she struck her second free confidently over the ball in the 12 minute. Piltown needed a score , and we got it from the puck out as Danielle OBrien found Ciara Dunne, who in turn , found Lorna OShea who raced down the right wing before placing a perfect pass to Lorraine Long who was free in the middle on the 45, and Lorraine made no mistake and levelled it again. Soon after, another foul led to another free and another point as this time Patsy Kenny stood over the ball before raising the white flag , as Piltown took the lead in the 14th minute. Windgap were coming strong though, and from a 45 , Deirdre Purcell scored her 3rd placed ball of the half in the 19th minute. Sinead McCarthy struck two frees over the bar in the 25 and 28 minute to put Piltown two points up just coming to half time. But then ref Maurice Flynn awarded a penalty to Windgap. Deirdre Purcell stood over it , facing Danielle OBrien. Purcell struck , OBrien saved and cleared the ball to safety. HT score Piltown 0-06 Windgap 0-04
Windgap were now shooting into what one supporter calls the ‘scoring goal’ at the Complex end. And sure enough in the first minute he was proved right as Deirdre Purcell struck a speculative ball into the danger area and it missed everyone and went into the net! What a start for the away side. Piltown needed a score, and we got two from the hurley of Sinead McCarthy as she struck two frees over the bar to put us back in the lead after 40mins.
But Windgap were gaining the upper hand, with the running of Nathania Jackson and Deirdre Purcell, and the movement and link play from Molly Walsh and Eimear Smith, Piltown were struggling to get any meaningful attacks to trouble Catherine Foley in the Windgap goal. In the Windgap defence, centre back Gillian Costello with Eimear Moylan and Elenor Hayes were keeping chances for Niamh Culleton , Sophie Holden and Nicola Phelan to a minimum. But once again, the potent attackers of Windgap struck when needed , as full forward Niamh Bambrick found the back of the net with another speculative shot after 41mins.
And 3mins later Emer Barron found herself all alone in the centre and made no mistake to raise a third green flag. Chloe Power replied with a point to finish the scoring. The game turned into a stalemate from then with Windgap snuffing out Piltown attacks quite easily. A deserved victory for the visitors , goals win games, and we now look forward to the start of the League campaign in two weeks time. Final score Piltown 0-09 Windgap 3-05

Leinster League ’23. Group B rd 3.     Sunday 5 March 23

Piltown 1-07     Lucan Sarsfields 0-08.

Piltown grabbed their second victory in the league on Sunday afternoon as they got the better of a good Lucan Sarsfields of Dublin side in a tight game. It was Holden show, as Chloe scored 1-03 , and Sophie score 0-01 as well as tormenting the Lucan defenders with her non stop tackling and running throughout the 60mins. It was a chilly afternoon with a slight breeze going to the road goal which was in the visitors favour for the first half , and they wasted no time raising the white flag in the second minute from the right wing.
Chloe Holden replied with a goal in the 5th minute after the ball dropped short in the Lucan area , and then that was added to by Sinead McCarthy with a point in the 7th minute, after some nice passing that started with MarieBeth Kirby in goal. Lucan were holding their own, as they pointed 3 points from frees and 1 from play , with Niamh Culleton scoring in the 29th minute to leave the scores level , 1-02 to 0-05 at half time.
The second half burst into life with 3 points from frees in the first five minutes of the half from Chloe Holden , and a point from the middle scored by Lorraine Long in the 37th minute before Lucan could reply. It took the away side 16 minutes before they could score mainly due to the savage workrate of Lorna OShea and Sinead McCarthy in the midfield, and Stacey OBrien, Emer Long and Emily McCarthy in the half back line. And it was a sign that the work rate was paying off for the home side as Sarsfields only score 3 points in the second half. Sophie Holden rounded off the scoring with a well deserved point in the 48th minute.
Final Score : Piltown 1-07 Lucan Sarsfields 0-08

Leinster league 2023 – Grp B – Rd 2.    Sunday 19 Feb 23

Naas Camogie 1-09    Piltown 0-09

We travelled north up the M9 to Naas to take on Kildare champions in round 2 of the Leinster League on Sunday 19 feb.

On a pitch with a healthy growth of grass , the ball was thrown in and away we went.

Sinead mc Carthy stood over a free in the 4th minute , she saw Nicole Culleton free on the 21 and dropped the ball into her hand, Nicole turned and put the ball over the bar for the first score.

Naas were dangerous and were breaking from midfield , they equalised on the 9th minute as they scored from out on the right wing.

They were increasing the pressure and with the aid of a strong breeze they tagged on another 2 points before Chloe Holden got one back for us from a Edel Long pass. Once again Naas replied with a score from straight in front of the posts.

Our ever dangerous forward Ellen OKeeffe was on the score sheet with another one of her trademark runs down the right wing and she split the posts for our third point. Naas were on top in this half as our girls took a while to grab any possession and territory on the pitch, and they scored another 2 points to close out the half , with a reply from Sinead McCarthy , pointing a free from distance to make the score at half time Naas 0-06 Piltown 0-04 .

We started the second half much better as immediately we went on the offensive with the running of Emer Long , Sinead McCarthy and Lorna OShea turning the Naas defence and creating chances. After 3 mins Sinead stood over a 45 and put it over the bar, and that was followed by Ellens second of the game to level the scores on the 38th minute. But Naas weren’t quiet for long and their ever dangerous centre forward scored 2 points from in front of the posts to go back ahead. Nicola Phelan got one back on in the 47th minute as the game tempo went up a few notches as we headed towards the final whistle. But Naas always upped it a gear to reply , and they did again in the 56th minute from a 45 to go back to 2 points ahead. Ellen again scored a point to bring it back to the minimum in the 56th minute , and then Sinead McCarthy got her 3rd point of the game to level it in the 59th minute.

It was now a case of don’t lose what you have for both sides, and deep in injury time Naas worked the ball out to midfield to a free player, and Karen Duggan did what she had to , she slowed up the attack , but in the referees opinion it was a foul.

Then he moved the ball forward and it was now within scoring range. The sliothar fell short of the goal and was loose. Not for long as it was soon in the back of the net for an opportunistic goal by Naas. The final whistle went on the puck out.

A disappointing way to lose a game that we had fought hard to stay in throughout.

Leinster League - Group B Rd 1 - Sunday 12 Feb 23.

Piltown 3-07    Rathnure 2-04

The first game in Group B of the Leinster League was played this morning in Piltown.

It was a chilly dry morning and it took 9mins for the first score to be registered and it was the visitors that got it as the number 11 put it over the bar at the Complex end, quickly followed with another point from play.

It was taking a while for both sides to get their touch right after the layoff, but the layoff did Piltown forward Niamh Culleton no harm as she got our first score in the 14th minute after great work from Sinead McCarthy.

Then in the 21st minute the first green flag of the season was raised by Nicola Phelan after Fiona Downey put her through on goal.

Ellen OKeeffe scored a beauty from under the trees on the far sideline from distance to extend the lead after 27minutes.

Then came a flurry of goals to end the first half as Nicola Phelan got her second goal from a seemingly impossible angle on the end line that she volleyed over the keepers head into the far corner, and almost straight after, Ellen made another of her runs from the 45 straight for goal, she made no mistake as she buried it. And there was still time for one more as Rathnure went up the field and scored a great goal from the 21.

Half time - Piltown 3-02 Rathnure/ St Anne's 1-02.

The second half was stop/start without much fluidity as both teams cancelled each other out.But once again, the visitors got the first score of the half after 4mins with another goal to cut the lead to 3pts.

Piltown fought back through Edel Long and Ellen to get us back on track.

Sinead McCarthy nailed 2 45s and Lisa Norris got a point to finish the scoring.
