CLUB HISTORY
FOUR ERAS OF CAMOGIE IN PILTOWN
History compiled with the assistance of Joe Sullivan, Seamus Norris and Maura Brennan
CURRENT COMMITTEE
THE EARLY DAYS
Camogie has been played in Piltown for many years. The earliest reports of a team in the parish was Owning Camogie Club. This team existed around the late fifties, early sixties. They trained in a field in Fanningstown opposite where Robert Duggan currently lives. Among their players were Tessie Duggan (Flynn), Eileen Kiely (Norris), Breda Power, Maud Murphy (Kelly) and Kathleen Duggan (Holden). There were also players from Windgap such as Wazzie Power and Eileen Doyle. There are no reports of any successes but there are stories of vans being stolen to get to matches in Mullinavat! Granddaughters of Eileen Kiely and Wazzie Power play for the club today.
MODERN BEGINNINGS
The modern club was founded in 1978, first fielding a team at Under-14 and later at U16 and Junior. A committee of six was formed to support the fledgling team:
Chairman - John O'Shea RIP
Secretary - Joe Sullivan
Treasurer - Dick Murphy RIP
Committee members - Chrissie Dwan RIP, Anne Dwan RIP and Marie Aylward.
Other trainers included Margaret Norris and Fiona Knox.
The club colours were white and red, Piltown colours of that era.
A team was entered into the Under-14 Feile Na nGael competition when it was held in Kilkenny in 1978 and 1979.
1978 Panel: Josie O’Shea, Michelle Gilman, Lucy Giles, Marie Fitzpatrick, Mary Kinsella, Fiona Knox, Carmel Phelan, Margaret Holden, Evonne Fitzpatrick, Marie Cuddihy, Celia Giles, Ann Dunne, Ann O’Brien, Margaret Carroll, Lucy Knox, Margaret Talbot.
1979 Panel: Marie Fitzpatrick, Michelle Gilman, Lucy Knox, Bernadette Gilman, Majella Giles, Stephanie Carroll, Ann Dunne, Kay Cuddihy, Evonne Fitzpatrick, Denise Everett, Celia Giles, Fiona Coffey, Marie Power, Rosemary O’Toole, Pauline Foyle.
Mentors of teams from this period included Nelly Davis, Eileen Malone, Margaret Keever, and Josephine Norris.

Joe Sullivan recalled the first Sunday afternoon in 1978 when an invitation went out to girls in the Parish to come and play camogie. Between forty and fifty girls between the ages of 10 and 18 turned up and a few challenges were played to see what talent or skills might be out there. The stand out moment was a little 10 year old with all the skills of the game already honed. Her name was Marie Fitzpatrick and she won the Feile Skills competition two years later in 1980, and is one of only two Kilkenny girls to have ever won the National title. She went on to play in goal for the Kilkenny Senior team in their most successful era, winning seven senior All-Ireland medals and six National League medals. She is pictured 2nd left at the front of the photo above.
In the early Eighties, when Piltown's club was in a lull and not competing in matches Marie transferred to St Brigid's Club (Kilmanagh), with whom she also won many club titles. Marie's nieces continue to play for Piltown Camogie Club.

INTO THE EIGHTIES
Building interest in ladies sport
In the mid 80's, Piltown Camogie Club entered its third era. The driving force was Maura Brennan and her family, along with Mary Reid, Margaret O'Shea and others. Club members included several girls whose own children are playing today such as Sheila Keegan (Norris), Fiona Coffey (Kenny), Kay McCarthy (Phelan) and Martina Brennan (Power). Like the Owning club before there were also players from the Windgap parish including Joan O'Gorman, Judith Phelan and Mary Norris (Walsh).
The Junior squad were managed in the early days by Paul Murphy and Vivian Dooley. The team contested the Junior "B" County Final in 1988. A strong Tullogher team beat them 6-6 to 0-3 on a wet day in Nowlan Park. Ladies Camogie was a 12-a-side game in those days, changing to 15-a-side in 1999.

Others to manage the team in that period were Dan Phelan, Jim Grant and Seamus Norris. The club won an Under-14 Roinn C title in 1987 and featured long serving club members Cathy and Mairead Brennan, Michelle O'Shea and Miriam Reid. The club continued into the nineties when titles at Under-14 Roinn C (1987 and 1994) and Under-16 Roinn C (1996) were captured. Team trainers of juvenile teams in those days included Cathy and Mairead Brennan, Miriam Reid, Mary Reid, Maura Brennan, Ann Walsh (Brenor), Marie Fitzpatrick, Pauline Farrell and Catherine O'Shea. The official changeover from the traditional read and white team colours to today's black and amber took place in 1997. Noel Martin (RIP) was a great supporter of the club and ensured the pitch was lined and flags were in place before every home game.

Scor was a big part of the GAA social scene in the eighties. Similar to Feile but encouraged skils in drama, singing and Irish dancing. Juvenile players represented Piltown in singing and Irish dancing, while a joint effort in the adult club with the GAA led to a trip to the Gaiety theatre in Dublin for the finals in the late Eighties.
"I HOPE PLAYERS TODAY GET AS MUCH ENJOYMENT OUT OF THE GAME AS I DID. IF THEY MANAGE TO DO THAT, THEY WON'T GO TOO FAR WRONG."
Angela Downey

21ST CENTURY CAMOGIE
As the new century dawned in the year 2000, Eileen Malone and Marie O'Sullivan founded the current version of Piltown Camogie Club, following pleas from Dan Kenny, Principal of Piltown National School. Former Chairperson from the previous incarnation of the club, Maura Brennan, along with Jim Malone, Catherine McCarthy, Bernie Duggan, Mary O'Meara and Frances Malone quickly came on board to form a strong committee.
They were soon joined by Kate Foley who proved to be a top class administrator. They formed the backbone for the marvellous successes that have followed. Starting with a group of 20 primary school girls they worked hard on the skills of the game and claimed County titles at U12 and U-14 in 2002.

In 2007 Summer blitzes began for U12 and U10 players to encourage participation and practice skills. Piltown took part in them all and had many successes but, more importantly, they had fun and made friends. U8 blitzes were added in later years.

Piltown reformed a ladies team in 2005 with a few older players such as Cathy Brennan and Miriam Reid making a come-back to support the younger girls in fielding 15 players for the early matches. Early Junior team trainers included John Lonergan and Jim Norris. The ladies claimed the club's first adult title in 2008 by winning the Junior County final, beating Dicksboro in a replay in Piltown. The winning panel featured players from the previous incarnation of the club such as Mairead Diffley (Brennan) and Michelle O'Shea, and many of the girls who started the first U-12 team in 2000. The team also fielded a young Katie Power, who won a Camogie All-Star with Kilkenny the following year and others in 2013, 2017 and 2018.

The Feile na nGael annual competition has been a great source of enjoyment for our players and mentors over the years. It's a competition were success is often secondary to enjoyment and lasting memories. Joining a parade on Dublin's O'Connell Street was a stand-out moment for many players in 2012, when Piltown represented kilkenny in Dublin, hosted by local club St Judes. Hosting and visiting other camogie teams builds friendships and lifelong memories.

The Club's U21 team has had notable success in recent years. While many clubs struggle to field a team at this age group Piltown won the Roinn B final in 2012, followed by Roinn A finals in 2016 (captained by Jennifer Norris) and 2019 (captained by Aoife Norris).
BUILDING TEAM PARTICIPATION
More important that winning competitions, player retention has been the club's biggest achievement in recent years. Fall-off from age 16 in any female sport is a big challenge to overcome. Fielding a second ladies team in recent years has guaranteed game time to older players, and younger players can try out the adult game while still performing in their own age group.
WEARING THE BLACK AND AMBER
Many of the Piltown's players have represented their counties (Kilkenny, Tipperary and Waterford) with distinction as the club goes from strength to strength. Players who represent their county give many hours of extra time travelling, training and striving to make the cut on a starting fifteen. Others have represented their province and country in other sports while still swinging a hurley when it fitted into the schedule.
ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS
In 2013, the club won its first Intermediate County League Title when they beat Ballyhale Shamrocks 0-13 to 0-10 in John Locke Park, Callan. The following year the team were unbeaten in any match, achieving League and Championship victories before clinching the ultimate trophy any club team can acheive - the Club All Ireland Championship. The management team that year were Jim Malone, Eamonn Kenny, Tony Foley and Kay Phelan.
The organisiation required to bring a team to a final Croke Park is phenomenal. Led confidently by club secretary, Sheila Norris, there was a sense of the whole parish rolling in behind the team which created a momentum over the winter of 2014 which felt unstoppable. With a "one match at a time" attitude, the panel of 31 players worked hard together and as individuals to reach peak fitness.
They beat Lismore (Waterford) 1-10 to 1-9 in Croke Park on 1st March 2015. A large bonfire was lighting when the team returned to Piltown that night, organised by members of the GAA Club.

Piltown Camogie Club now fields two ladies teams, at Senior and Junior level. The Senior League was won for the first time in 2019 under the management of Michael Brennan with success over Thomastown (3-15 to 0-9) but the Championship eluded them.
The club has built up a membership of over 150 players competing at all grades, and players have been rewarded with years of enjoyment on the field and several county titles in every grade from U12 right up to Senior.
Our "Achievements" page, records the stand-out moments and key medal winners.
The volunteers who have given their time to training, mentoring, administrating and providing first aid and physio are too numerous to mention individually, but their efforts have all contributed to the success of the club.
We tried to concentrate on the simple things – to get a performance out of ourselves.
I knew that we would win if we performed to what we were capable of.
Katie Power - on the All Ireland Club Final 2015
PILTOWN CAMOGIE CLUB SPONSORSHIP
.....A community effort
To ensure camogie is an accessible sport for everyone, sponsorship and fundraising subsidises the cost of club membership. Innovative fundraisers, such as club calendars, lotteries etc, have been run over the years to keep costs for players low.
-
O'Shea Farms/Iverk Produce have sponsored the club for many years with playing kits and funds.
-
John Phelan Skip Hire and Septic Tank Disposal sponsor our website.
Many other local businesses and individuals have sponsored us in many ways, particularly when teams reach finals which can be costly to deservedly support players.
